Why Do Some Campgrounds Have Late Check In Fees?
A late arrival can seem pretty simple from the guest side. The trip ran long, traffic was worse than expected, or you just got a late start. Your campsite is still there, and your reservation is paid for.
So why is there an extra fee?
At a small, family-run campground, late check-ins affect more than the clock—they can affect the real people that operate the campground and their quality of life.
When you arrive, someone needs to be available to identify and register you, get you through the gate, escort you to your campsite, help you park safely, and answer those first-arrival questions. During normal check-in hours, trained staff are on site and prepared to do exactly that.
After hours, it's different. Many campgrounds don't have a night shift or a 24-hour front desk. A late arrival can mean a staff member stays past the end of their scheduled shift instead of going home. At a family-run park, it can mean the owners remain available waiting for an arrival time that may continue to change—delaying dinner, an evening walk, personal plans, or simply some much-needed rest.
And sometimes the biggest impact isn't the check-in itself—it's the waiting. An arrival expected at 6:00 that becomes 7:00, and then 8:00, can keep someone tied to the campground for several hours. From the guest's perspective, the actual check-in may take only a few minutes. Behind the scenes, considerably more time may have been set aside to make sure someone was there when they arrived.
Late arrivals also require a little more care. Guiding an RV, especially when it's large, into an unfamiliar campground after dark can be more difficult. Roads, site numbers, trees, turns, and other campers' sites are harder to see, and a mistake is easier to make. At parks like ours, an escort isn't just a courtesy—it helps get you safely to the right place while minimizing disruption to campers who are already settled in for the evening.
There's another consideration, too: campgrounds have quiet hours for a reason. After a certain point in the evening, families may have children sleeping, campers may be sitting quietly around their fires, and others may already be in bed. Helping a late-arriving RV get directly to its site and settled as quickly and quietly as possible helps us protect that experience for everyone else.
Our late check-in fee helps compensate for that additional after-hours time and allows us to keep the cost with the guests who need the service rather than building it into everyone's camping rate.
We understand that travel doesn't always go according to plan. Traffic happens. Breakdowns happen. Delays happen. But if your plans change, please keep the campground informed as early—and as accurately—as possible. Good communication gives us the opportunity to plan around your arrival rather than simply wait for it.
The goal isn't to penalize anyone for arriving late. It's simply to protect the time of the people who are here to welcome you when you do arrive—and the peaceful evening of the campers who arrived before you.
